our story

We are a community of Christ-followers striving to be more about BEING the church rather than just GOING to church. Drawing off the concepts of the Hebrew word shamah, we are learning how to live lives that aren't divided into church, work and play but instead focusing on lives that are fully integrated for the glory of God.

We're seeking to discover God in new ways and to listen for His voice as we go about day-to-day life instead of just putting Him in a box only to be taken out on Sunday. We long to be a community that lives out a picture of Godly love in day-to-day life and impacts our community with sound biblical teaching and cultural relevance.

What does "cultural relevance" mean?  It doesn't mean abandoning the truth of God's Word or God's Son, Jesus Christ.  It DOES mean presenting these truths in a way that has the greatest opportunity to reach a new and changing generation.

As Jesus used relevant parables to relate to farmers, pharisees and townsfolk of his day, we desire to package the Truth in ways that the current generation can grasp and live out.

We're firm believers in the concept that we need to BE the church instead of just GOING to church, so we hope that as members of Leawood Pres., we are all reaching out as reflections of God's love at all times.

If you still have questions (and we hope you do!) contact us at info@leawoodpres.org and we'd love to share more!

Our own statements of belief are not intended to be comprehensive of all aspects of life and faith, but are a summary of a guide to our convictions as a “Jesus Church.”

THE JOURNEY
DISCOVER YOUR PATH

Would you say there is at least a small gap between God’s perfect you and the current, real-life you?  We’re with you.  We want to help lead you from where you are to where God wants you to be.  You can either change God’s vision for your life, or take steps toward Jesus’s vision of a flourishing life.  It’s not linear, and it tends to be a bit messy, but it’s a process nonetheless.

KNOW GOD

Know means love in the original Hebrew text.  We’re to love God and love others with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength.  You can’t follow Jesus and not love.

GROW IN THE LIKENESS OF CHRIST

Be intentional about practicing “soul-training exercises” e.g., worship, reading and studying God’s Word together, and praying daily- both individually and in authentic Christian community.

SHOW THE GLORY OF GOD

We value faith expressed in action that is empowered by the Holy Spirit as a natural outflow of our faith in Jesus, expressing God’s love, compassion, and justice in word and deed in our everyday lives.  We do this by serving in the church, in the community and in the world.

GO MAKE DISCIPLES

Our mission is to help anyone and everyone become a follower of Jesus.

Because people matter to God.

Because life is better in community.

Because there is no problem in the world that conforming to Jesus cannot solve.

LEADERSHIP

RYAN KAPPLE
LEAD PASTOR

rkapple@leawoodpres.org

Ryan Kapple is the lead pastor of Leawood Presbyterian Church. Ryan’s preaching centers around how faith in Christ can impact our everyday lives with God and others.  Ryan grew up in Kansas City as the son of a pastor, which inspired him to go to seminary and become a pastor. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Psychology. He holds a Master of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary.  Ryan was the youth pastor at Colonial Presbyterian for 15 years. He revitalized a dying church that now has 200 kids under 18 years of age. He met his wife, Amy at K-State and they have four teenage kids. Their lives are busy supporting their kids in athletics, dance and youth group.  He loves to play basketball and golf, if he can find people to put up with his terrible game. Like him on Facebook and Instagram.

LEAWOOD PRES & GOVERNANCE

We believe the Church is the community through which God wants to bring love, healing, growth, and eternal life to the human race, and to which he invites everyone to follow Jesus. Leawood Pres seeks to pursue our mission to bless Kansas City for Jesus through a transforming relationship with Christ and authentic community with each other. We are part of the denomination PCUSA and, in keeping with our Presbyterian heritage, our congregation elects elders to govern the church. Comprised of elected elders and the lead pastor, the Session (the name of our governing board) has responsibility and authority for governing the congregation and guiding its mission for Christ in the world. The Session works closely with staff leadership and represents the congregation to provide oversight and governance of the church’s ministry, spiritual health, long-term strategy, finances, and administration.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SESSION

LPC is committed to pursuing its mission as a church with God-honoring love, zeal, and excellence in all that we are and do.

The Session’s key responsibilities are to provide leadership, governance and guidance by:

1. Providing spiritual oversight

2. Shepherding the flock

3. Discerning, planning and strategizing

4. Overseeing church management
